Hey guys!  I am so excited for Thanksgiving and Christmas!  This is my favorite time of year but one thing always comes to my mind about this time….SPACE!  My boys closets are cluttered and there is no where for the clutter to go…UGH!  I have been working on their closets here and there but I am buckling down over the break and starting with shelving!  My first dent in this mess is a tower of shelves in one of the closets!  It was totally FREE and got rid of my scrap MDF and 1×3’s!

I measured and cut my 1×3’s (custom measurements) and applied liquid nails on the backside of each board.

I then arranged them to form a ledge on all three sides of the wall, securing with my nailer.  I did find studs for added support (I never know when these may be used for a ladder:)

Next, I applied liquid nails to the top edges of the 1×3’s and secured the MDF on top.  (I did paint the MDF boards prior to attaching them).

I also removed the closet rod from the top of this area.

To finish it off, I went over all of the cracks with caulk and then painted the 1×3’s (I had our trim paint matched at Home Depot and mixed with a latex satin).  That was it!!!   I LOVE them and can’t wait to build more:)

I love having room for a bookshelf!  Much better than the drawer they were stuffed in:)

Did I mention it was FREE!  If you don’t have the scrap MDF or 1×3’s, you can still build your own closet storage very cheap!  Have your hardware store cut down a sheet of 4×8 MDF into 1×12 boards.  A sheet of MDF is about $32 and it will go a long way!

Well, I’m off to organize a little more and decorate our tree!  I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving break:)))

  1. This is EXACTLY what I’ve been wanting to do to my tiny upstairs coat closet to organize the tubs of products that have no space for anywhere else (I coupon). I wanted to put in shelves, but it’s so small, I never could find anything pre-made that would fit. I’m glad I saw this today.

  2. Love it! I actually did this to a super tiny coat closet we had in our house because I don’t have much cupboard space in my kitchen. I keep forgeting to post that on my blog… you have given me inspiration to get that posted 🙂 thanks! and great job!

  3. Thanks for the great inspiration! Guess I didn’t realize it would be so easy to build. 🙂 Tomorrow I’m off to check out my dad’s stash of scrap wood. Thanks again!
