Hey guys!  Well, I went plan shopping again over at Ana’s and I fell in love with this!

This is the Pottery Barn Andover Media Console.  It’s on SALE now for $700;)  Gag!  I used Ana’s plans and built my own for about $175 including hinges and knobs!

Here are a few of the steps I took:)

I started here:)

I skipped the shelf for the drawers and just did 4 cabinets with doors.  I need the space;)

Added the back…

the bottom trim and 1×6 boards for the top!

This is where the fun stopped:(  The doors were a pain but not impossible.  Whether you are doing all doors or drawers and doors DO NOT CUT THESE PIECES ACCORDING TO THE PLANS.  WAIT UNTIL YOU CAN MEASURE THE OPENINGS!  I have learned this from past experiences and measured my actual door openings before I cut the wood this go ’round.  I went back and compared my measurements to the plans and they were very different.  There is no room for error with the way these doors sit in the cabinet and it is a headache waiting to happen;)

My new favorite hinges!!!  Pretty sure Tenley could hang on these bad boys and the doors wouldn’t budge!  They are $5 for 2 and I bought 4 sets.  (Home Depot)

Okay!  I have to stop there but I can’t wait to show you how I finished it!  This is my FAVORITE piece of furniture I have built (I’m sure that will last until my next piece;)  Over all, I would say that this was an intermediate build.  The actual cabinet itself was beginner but the doors upgraded  it to intermediate;)  Time invested:  about 4 good quality morning naps from cutting the wood until the last knob was screwed in:)  LOVE!

Thanks so much for stopping by!!!

  1. Did you predrill holes for your screws on this since you used MDF and plywood? If not, what screws did you use? Also, where did you use your Kreg versus regular screws? Thx!!

  2. I know this is an old post, but I am in love!! I have the base all built, just needed to start the doors. Nervous that they will come out crooked as my wood was cut by home depot, so not precise and this is my first project! Also wondering, what time of wood did you use for the doors? Thanks so much:))

  3. I was wondering what type of saw did you use to cut your wood pieces? Also, do you have any tips on cutting wood straight?!?! please help!!

  4. i love ana’s plans, but you hit the nail on the head: her measurements are NEVER accurate– and sometimes her directions aren’t exactly logical. While she’s a great starting board, you have to do a lot of the stuff on the fly. a lesson we learned doing a bookshelf AND a farmhouse table from her plans!

  5. I can’t wait to see it finished!! I’ve been looking for the “right” media console for atleast a couple of years. They’re either too expensive or not enough storage, etc. I think this might be the ONE!!
    Thank you for sharing! 🙂

  6. i am glad to see your advice on this build…we are building this cabinet in about a month. when it COOLS off a bit. i just finished one build in this heat and i just about died. lol i can’t wait to see the finished product.

  7. I am so happy I found your site a few weeks ago! It has inspired me and will enable me to finish our home redo (a 4 year plan by the way!) on a budget we can afford! Thanks sooooo much!!

  8. I made this last year. And didn’t measure the doors first. IT LOOKED HORRIBLE. I ended up having to throw all the doors and drawers away. Because they were SO OFF. I just left it alone and never redid them. I guess it kind of works for now. Especially with my babies. Can’t have smashed fingers if you don’t have doors and drawers {wink}

    1. O no!!!! I’m sorry Brooke but I’m sure it is beautiful without the doors and drawers! I think the door lengths are actually a mistake on the plans….

      1. I am so excited to build this! I know it was a long time ago, but what size did you end up cutting the wood for the doors? I plan to do all 4 doors as well and want to know how far off the measurements in the original plans are for comparison. Thanks so much!

  9. You have some awesome cutting and building skills Ashley! Also… is Tenley your child? My daughter’s name is Kenley! LOL Great minds think alike!

    1. Thank you Susan! Yes, my daughter is Tenley! I love the name Kenley and in fact, I wanted to name my daughter Kenley but my hubs friend had just named his daughter Kenley so that was a no-go;) Love the name Kenley!!!

    1. Our house faces West so it is managable before 11am. You are right though….anytime later than that and it is literally dangerous!
