As promised I am here to share how I made my ottoman slipcover!

I must warn you…

I am not the best at writing sewing tutorials! For some reason, I find it much harder to put sewing steps into words.  But… Here we go!

First you will need to cut your fabric.

I found my fabric at Joann’s.  It’s a coral colored zebra print and I love it!  Plus, it’s considered an outdoor fabric which means my kids will have a much harder time destroying it!

These will be your cuts…

Top – 1 piece at 19″ x 17.5″

Longer Sides – 2 pieces at 19″ x 18″

Shorter Sides – 17.5″ x 18″

You will attach all of your side pieces first to form the outside of the cube.  Leave 1/2″ for seam allowance.  Start each stitch where the “top” of your ottoman will be.  Start 1/2″ from the top and side just like this.

Sew all the way down each side to the bottom of the piece.  You can fit it around your cube like this.  Ignore the top piece in the picture!  I took the pic too late 😉

I like to iron my seams down like this to keep it from bunching and it helps it look more crisp.

Your next step is attaching your top piece.  Make sure your long and short sides match up when you do this part.  Open up a corner and lay a corner of the top piece onto it.  It will line up like this.  I like to hold mine in place with a pin.

Just like the side seams you will start your stitches 1/2″ from the side and top.  Here is a shot of the top piece of fabric after I have attached it to my sides.

Once you have your top piece on, it’s time to make the bottom hem.  I like to pull the cover on the ottoman and fold my fabric up where I want it to be like this.  Just hold it in place with a pin.

Iron this hem and then double fold your fabric to the line you ironed like this.

Stitch it all the way around and you are finished!  I promise it is a WHOLE lot easier than it sounds. 😉

Please let me know if you have any questions at all and thank you for stopping by!

  1. I am newer to sewing. I’m pretty competent but am still learning, so the corner of the slip cover is a little tricky. I’ve already built the frame and padded it (and love it!), but now I need to do the cover. Any other tips you can offer on sewing the corner!?
