Hey there!  I’ve been on a mirror kick lately and I’m loving it!  This week, I spent about $20 and 2 hours on this DIY Mirror cutie!

DIY_Wall_Mirror

I LOVE it:)  It’s the perfect weekend project and you get so much bang for your buck!  Here’s how you can make your own:)

beveled_mirrorI started by purchasing this 14-inch beveled mirror.  It’s only $10.99 and you can purchase it on Amazon below!  It’s actually a candle plate but it makes the perfect  DIY mirror;)  Hobby Lobby carries similar plates but they are smaller.  This was the largest I could find at a low price!

It was sold out but I purchased anyway and I still received it in a week!

Ryobi_Compound_MiterI used my 10″ Miter saw to make all of my cuts.  This is an awesome saw that you will get a TON of use from!

If you aren’t ready to purchase a compound miter saw, this hand saw and miter box is the perfect solution for small projects like this:)

measurements

I purchased 1 – 1×4 @ 10 ft. and made 5 cuts at 22″ long.

Kreg_JigThen I used my Kreg Jig to drill pocket holes into 4 of the 22″ boards.

Pocket_HolesI then used 1 1/4″ pocket hole screws to attach the boards together.

45_degree_cuts

Now, make 45-degree cuts off of each corner.  I marked 5″ on each corner (forming a triangle with each point – so you will have 2 – 5″ marks on each corner)

Now for the finish!  I chose to have a distressed-paint finish for this one.

Rust-Oleum EspressoI chose a favorite Espresso spray paint in satin for my base coat.  You just need one good coat for this step.

distress_with_vaselineI love to use Vaseline to distress-paint.  It’s super easy!  After your base coat, just wipe a very thin amount of Vaseline on all of the area that you want the base coat to show through.

Rustoleum_Heirloom_White_edited-1For the top coat, I chose another favorite, Heriloom White in satin.  You will need 2 coats for the top coat!

sandingOnce the paint has dried, just sand all over the piece with 120-grit sand paper.  The Vaseline keeps the top coat from sticking to the base coat and the paint will sand off with very little effort!  I love this technique because it gives a great “chippy-look”! 😉

Now to attach the beveled mirror!

peel_off_pads

Peel the felt pads off of the back of the mirror.

Then, apply a very generous amount of Liquid Nails to the back of the mirror.  Keep it close to the center so it doesn’t leak out the sides and make a mess;)

place_mirror_on_palletLay it on the center of the boards and let it dry!  Mine dried pretty quick.  Make sure the mirror does not budge before you hang it on the wall.  I suggest letting it sit over night before hanging.  You can still finish the project while it’s drying though;)
cup_hangersTo hang this cutie, I purchased these cup hangers and spray painted them with a little Espresso!  I pre-drilled a small hole into the top of the mirror frame and screwed them in. (I chose for my mirror to hang long ways)

chainI purchased a small box of black chain and cut it to size with my wire cutters.

That was it!  Just hang it up!  You can use a black screw and anchor it into the wall or, you can use a finial like I did.  I purchased this finial from Lowe’s.  It’s an Allen & Roth wooden finial (from their curtain rod accessories)  that comes in a 2-pack for about $12.  I splurged since this project was so inexpensive and I really think it adds so much to the piece!

allen_and_roth_finialJust make sure you anchor it into the wall if you don’t have a stud to sink it into.

I’m just loving it!  Nothing better than a 2-hour project for only $20!  Thanks so much for stopping by and have a great weekend!

If you love my DIY Mirror, I would LOVE your pins;)

Thanks so much!

Ashley:)

  2. I have a mirror that has just been sitting in a closet for years and a pallet that I have been trying to figure out what to do with. Guess I will have to break it down and use that has the base! Thanks for such a great idea! Now I have a fun and cute project for this weekend. 🙂

  3. Such a neat idea. Would be perfect for gifting. I got a Kreg jig for Christmas. This is my first project I am making with it. Almost finished, but mine is going to be black.

  4. This looks so easy and perfect project for someone looking to get started with the Kreg Jig. I’m rusty with mine, so this will be a great excuse to get back to it. 🙂
