Hey friends!

I am LOVING these new cedar planter boxes I made for the front entry!

How cute are those babies?

Of course I teamed up with my sweet friend, Miss Ana White to design them!  I will share some of my tips and tricks here, and you can access the full set of plans over on her site!

So… Let’s get started!

I used all cedar boards to construct these!
I knew I wanted these to stand the test of time, so I used my Kreg Jig for the whole build!

Ash and I just shared a video on how easy it us to use a Kreg Jig and just what the heck it is!  You can check that out HERE!

I built all of my frames first.  Here is what they looked like and where I did my pocket holes!

The wider frame…

And the skinnier frame here!

Once those were done I used my fence posts along the back.  I used my favorite nailer for this part!

This guy is the bomb.  So easy and no cords or compressors to lug around.  Plus… It will shoot up to a 2″ nail.  Woohoo!

This is what all of my frames looked like…

I decided to build up the base so I wouldn’t need to use as much soil.  I used 2×2 pressure treated boards attached with wood screws like this to build the base…

Lining a Planter Box

Then, I just planked over that with extra fence pieces… Easy!

I like to line my pots with landscaping fabric.  This is really cheap and comes on a big roll.  I just cut several layers and staple them around the edge of the box before filling them with soil.

Wood Planter box

I used my very favorite Rust-Oleum Ultimate Wood Stain in Dark Walnut to finish it off.

Because these would be outside in the Texas ‘elements’ I also finished off both boxes with Rust-Oleum Spar Varnish.

You can get both of these at Lowe’s!

That’s it!  I filled these babies up with some of my favorite plants and I love the way they transformed my entry!  What do you think??

  1. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
❤❤ I built my own using the plans at www. WoodworkPlans.info – highly recommended you check those out too. They are detailed and super easy to read and understand unlike several others I found online. The amount of plans there is mind-boggling… there’s like 16,000 plans or something like that for tons of different projects. Definitely enough to keep me busy with projects for many more years to come haha ❤❤❤

  2. Great post! You have given me the confidence to go ahead and build the planters I want! No more waiting until the hubs is in the mood!

  3. This will be awesome come spring! I am working on having the best garden yet this year and this will be a cute addition!

  4. I went to Lowe’s and they only had the interior version of the varnish. I may have to order it. Thanks for posting the picture! It makes it easier to find things in the store (if they have them).

  5. Thanks for this. My husband doesn’t like woodworking and doesn’t have much faith in my abilities to make something myself. I keep telling him that other women have made these things and succeeded so I want to try. This would be a good project to start with, I think. Are the 1 x 2 and 1 x 3 boards plain pine? Is there a problem with them holding up in weather?

    1. the large leafed ones are caladiums. The taller plant in back and the purple leaf with green border in the middle are coleus. Not sure about the flowering one… Happy planting!
