Hey there!  You may have seen a teaser of this project on our Instagram last week!  I’m so excited to share it today 🙂

DIY-SconceI got busy making this Wall Scone Lantern.  I’m totally in love with the industrial look of it and the copper color on the metal is so fun!  The best part is you can make it for under $15 and you can make 3 out of the supplies you need!

Here’s how!

2x6Purchase 1 2×6 board that is 8′ long.  Cut down a piece to 24″.

Metal-TileNext, purchase a 24 1/2″ sheet of brushed aluminum tile.  I purchased mine from Lowe’s but you can also click the link below to purchase it on Amazon.

Cutting-Metal-TileThis Aluminum Tile is awesome!  It is used a lot for easy, DIY backsplashes and it can be cut with scissors!  Start by cutting a 6″ piece off of the end of the tile.  *Remember this tile will make 3 sconces so save the other piece!

Cut-Off-End-of-TileCut off the edge on one end so the ends match.

Before-PaintPerfect!

Rustoleum-Metallic-AccentsNow for the paint!  With a foam brush, I barely brushed over the aluminum tile with Metallic Accents in Copper Penny color.  This paint is so fun and it comes in a ton of colors!

Painting-Metal-TilesNotice that the aluminum is peeking through the paint.  I just lightly brushed one coat on.  Let it dry!

Rustoleum_Dark_WalnutWhile it’s drying, you can stain your board!  I chose to stain mine with Dark Walnut Stain.
How-to-Stain-Wood Just wipe one coat on with a foam brush, let it sit for about 5 minutes and wipe it down with a clean cloth to even the color out!

RustOleum-Spar-VarnishIf you are going to hang this outside, you need to give the wood 2 coats of Spar Varnish to protect it 🙂

Furniture-NailsOnce the paint and stain are dry, it’s time to attach the aluminum tile to the board.  I purchased these furniture nails at Lowe’s.

Attaching-Metal-Tile-to-BoardHammer one nail into each corner of the tile.

How-to-Make-Wood-Look-OldFinish off by sanding down the edges of the board (it’s okay if your sander touches the edge of the tile, it just makes it look more distressed).  I used our favorite Corner Cat to distress.

Plant-HookI purchased this plant hanger at Lowe’s as well!  This is what we will use to hang our Mason Jar Lantern.

PredrillJust predrill a small hole for the plant hanger and attach it!

Now, it’s ready to hang a Mason Jar Lantern on it!

???I used the plans at www. WoodworkPlans.info for this project because they are much better – highly recommended you check those out too – it’s just a much better plan. They are detailed and super easy to read and understand unlike several others I found online. The amount of plans there is mind-boggling… there’s like 16,000 plans or something like that for tons of different projects. Definitely enough to keep me busy with projects for many more years to come haha?

  2. I’m in love with this project! Thanks for sharing. Did you try adding pebbles in the jar to nestle the candle? Too heavy?

  3. What a cute idea!!! I have one suggestion…if you’re going to varnish the wood for outdoor use, then you should sand it prior to varnishing. Definitely going to make this project. Thanks for sharing!

  4. A handy tip – Pour some salt in the mason jar and then place the candle inside. The salt will balance the candle and keep it upright. Enjoyed your project, especially the addition of the tin.

  5. These are great! The tiles come in copper too. Did you not use the copper one so you could let the tin show through?

  6. Looks like a few Christmas gifts to make in a jiffy after I make mine. And great, I am looking forward to seeing what you have for fall!

  7. This is on my to do list!! now that the kids are back in school, i can catch up on some diy(s).. It looks GREAT!! i cant wait until ya’ll do some FALL projects!!!
