As many of you know, I have been in the process of redoing my dining room. I have shared my tables, benches, sideboard and floating shelves over the last several weeks. Today I am sharing the DIY wine bottle wall sconce that I built to hang on each side of my window. Here they are!
Aren’t they fun?? SUCH a simple build too! And let’s talk price before we start…
You can build 2 sconces with 1 2×6 board. These run around $6 a piece. I found the wine bottles at Hobby Lobby for under $2.50 a piece (kept me from cleaning labels off of wine bottles), but you can also reuse old wine bottles.
That makes the total cost of these $6 in supplies… Too legit.
Let me show you how simple they are to build!
Start by making your cuts. I used my miter saw to make my cuts.
Next, add a line of Gorilla Wood Glue to the edge of your smaller piece like this.
Clamp it to the front of the long wood board like this. I lined my small board up 2″ from the bottom of the long board. I used a Kreg bar clamp to hold it in place, and used 2″ wood screws through the back of the long board and into the small boards. You may want to pre drill on this part to keep the wood from splitting. I used 2 screws for each sconce.
Now your sconce should look like this…
Before attaching my wine bottles, I finished the sconces. I first stained them using Varathane Dark Walnut stain. After that dried, I added some Vaseline to the edges and then painted the whole thing using a latex Sherwin Williams color called Anonymous (SW 7046). After that dried really good, I used my Ryobi Corner Cat sander over the entire thing. Where the Vaseline was the gray paint just chips away. I love the finish.
To attach the wine bottle, I used Gorilla Glue Epoxy.
I mixed both parts in a paper plate and put a bunch on the bottom of each bottle.
Next, I placed them in the center of each sconce and let them dry.
To attach my sconces I used my Ryobi Impact driver with 2.5″ wood screws. I found the studs on the wall first. If yours don’t line up with studs evenly be sure to use anchors. Just drive the wood screw through the back board and into the stud or anchor in the wall.
I left my screw showing because I knew my flowers would cover them up.
That’s it! Told you it was easy!
I found my stems at Hobby Lobby and my window panels are from Pottery Barn.
Be sure to check out the other updates I have done in the dining room!
Thanks so much for stopping by guys! Let me know if you have any questions at all!
Love these! Here’s mine…
how would you suggest hanging these without directly drilling into the wall?
I used these with a picture frame hook. It makes it stick out a lil bit so I put rubber stoppers on the bottoms.
I am in love with the tolix style chair! Please tell me where you found that.
I would love to know where you got your curtains from!
What a beautiful idea! I love them!
