Hey friends! It’s Wednesday! That means a new video tutorial! We recently crashed our friend Rachel’s house and built her a new kitchen nook. We have already shared the plans for the plank wall, dining table and dining benches, and today we are sharing plans for the fun hanging chalkboard! You can see the how-to video to create your own chalkboard HERE on YouTube!!
How cute is that? So easy and so cheap too! We will walk you through the whole project below, and you can download and print the FREE plans by clicking HERE!
Here is the supply list for the chalkboard… You can easily build it for under $20 in lumber!
First step is to make your cuts. Here is the cut list….
I used my K5 Kreg Jig to make the pocket holes in each of the shorter 1×4 pieces. These are 3/4″ pocket holes.
Here are the boards cut and ready to assemble…
Next, we attached the shorter boards to the longer boards to create our frame. We used 1.25″ pocket hole screws through the 3/4″ pocket holes.
We added the trim next. This is attached with wood glue and 1.25″ finish nails through the outside of the trim and into the frame.
At this point, we stained the entire frame with Briarsmoke by Varathane. It’s the perfect grey, brown and a match to the other pieces we built.
Final step is attaching the chalkboard panel to the back of the frame. We used our nailer with 5/8″ nails to keep them from popping through the front of the frame.
We put a small black hook on the wall, nailed some twine to the back of the chalkboard, and put it on the wall!
Here it is all finished up!
Thanks so much for stopping by guys! Let us know if you have any questions at all!
Would it be okay to use brad nails in olde if the staples? Would it be as sturdy?
Thanks for sharing this build. It turned out beautiful. I need to find a frame like that!
Thanks for the plans. You can get a 24″x36″ chalkboard panel at Lowes for $10. For custom dimensions you could buy a plywood panel and paint it for around $6-$10. I think the real cost is under $40.
What size jig are your using to drill your pocket holes ??
@Malin…did you seriously just ask that question???
Love this! Where did you buy the Chalk board? Cannot find one that size.
Thank you for sharing a smaller build..i was missing that. I don’t usually need to build bigger items…but I think I’ve tried most of your small ones. Yay!!!
Any tips on where to find that amazing pulley you mentioned in the video?
