Hey friends! Ash and I had lots of fun building my boy Brooks some new nightstands for his room! My goal on these was to design them as inexpensive as possible with the cost of wood so crazy high! I love the way they turned out… and he loves them too 😊

DIY Modern Farmhouse Nightstand

You can grab the FREE PLANS at the bottom of this post!

Before we get started, be sure to check out the DIY YouTube video on this build below!

To save money on these nightstands, I decided to rip my 2 x 2 boards from a single 2 x 6 board. You can also purchase the 2 x 2 boards separately if you prefer.

Step 1

The sides of this nightstand are created using 3/4” hardwood plywood. Cut each side to size, and add 3/4” Kreg pocket holes down both long sides. I used my Kreg Jig 720 PRO for this. LOVE LOVE this Kreg Jig model. For those of you still using your K5’s or other models, you should definitely check this one out!

Make sure to leave 7” of space between the top pocket hole and your second one. This will keep them hidden when the nightstand is complete.

You want the top of each leg to be flush with the top of the plywood panels and the inside of the plywood panel will be flush with the inside of each leg.

Step 2

The shelf boards are also created using 3/4” hardwood plywood boards. Cut each shelf piece to size, and add 3/4” pocket holes along all sides of both shelf boards. Attach the shelf boards to the side pieces using wood glue and 1.25” pocket hole screws.

The bottom board will line up flush with the bottoms of the plywood sides, and the top shelf will line up 7 inches from the top of the plywood sides.

Step 3

Attach the 2 x 2 horizontal support boards next. Add 1.5” pocket hole screws on each end of each 2 x 2 board.

These pocket holes will face down when you’re building the nightstand. Attach each board to the side boards using wood glue in 2.5” pocket hole screws. The top board will line up flush with the top of the sides, and the other two support boards will be flush with the shelf boards.

Step 4

Next, attach the top of the nightstand. This is a laminated pine project panel that is 1” thick. Attach it with a 1/2” overhang along all sides using wood glue and 2” pocket hole screws. I used the new Kreg Quick-Flip to counterbore my screws to give it a professional finish.

This new tool by Kreg is AMAZING! I first drilled the pilot holes with the drill bit side.

Then, you just flip the inside of the Quick-Flip to switch to the other side which is a square bit driver.

Then, drive the screw into the top through the frame. It’s a perfectly professional finish and super easy!

Step 5

Cut the back of the nightstand from 1/4” hardwood plywood. Attach the back to the nightstand using wood glue and 3/4” staples through the plywood panel and into the nightstand frame.

Step 6

Now you’re ready to build the door! Build the frame of the door first. Cut the 1×2 board to size and add 3/4” pocket holes on each end of both of your shorter boards.

Attach your shorter boards to the longer boards flush at the corners using 1.25” pocket hole screws and wood glue to form a frame.

Cut the panel of the door using 1/4 inch hardwood plywood. Attach it evenly to the back of the door frame using wood glue and 3/4” staples.

Nightstand Finish and Hardware

At this point, you are ready for paint or stain. I like to add the finish to the piece before adding all hardware.

I found my hinges HERE on Amazon. I found the door pulls on Amazon HERE.

I stained the entire piece with a combination of Varathane Golden Oak and just a small amount of Varathane Willow Grey mixed in it.

Where I found everything else!

I found his bed on Wayfair! You can find it HERE! And I found his bedding that I LOVE from Beddy’s! For those of you that don’t know what Beddy’s is…. GO CHECK THEM OUT! As a mom of 6, I can’t tell you how much I love their bedding. It’s so well made, so cute, and the bed is actually made! Yes, please! You can see the set I got for Brooks here!

I LOVE the way it turned out!
