I was recently asked to review Rit’s line of liquid dyes. I have used Rit on several projects before, so I knew I would love it. I went to their website to check things out, and was so excited to learn that you can dye wood! Many of you may already know this, but it was news to me and got me a little giddy. I decided to make my baby some photo blocks for his room. These make awesome Christmas presents! The grandparents love them.
I started with my wood pieces. Mine were scraps of 2×4, 2×6 and 2×8. I made no measurements… Just used the good ol’ eyeball method.
Now for the Rit dye…
I decided to use Cherry Red for his room. One great thing about Rit are your color options. They have 25 different colors to choose from. You can also use their great Colorit Formula Guide to achieve 500 different colors… LOVE that!
I prepared my dye by adding 1 cup of the dye to 16 cups of really hot water. I used an empty rubbermaid container to mix mine.
Make sure to use a glove! I soaked both sides of each piece for 5 minutes each. So easy! No brushing or wiping… Just let it soak!
Then I let them dry on an old towel. I love that I didn’t have to wipe it like stain, and I could do it in my kitchen because there were no bad fumes! My kind of project! I also love that you can achieve the look of a stain in so many different color options.
While those were drying I printed some pictures of my little man using my printer with regular paper. I cut each picture to fit the blocks with just a little left on each side.
I used spray adhesive to attach my photos to the blocks.
Then, I used a thin layer of mod podge over each picture.
I used my Silhouette to cut out his name in black vinyl. You can also print and cut your own name using your printer and just mod podge the paper.

These are another take on the photo blocks I did for my in-laws last year. I think these are such a fun, cheap and easy gift! They are great for any occasion and can be done in SO many different ways… Especially now with Rit dye!

Biggest thing I’ve built so far.! In fact, with the weather…..my shop is in my living room ! We stay in the den all winter where the fireplace is anyway but my dh really would like me to get my tools etc out of there. I try to go out on the porch to do my sawing and sanding but …opps….sometimes when he’s at workl……Oh Well ! I used Ritz dye on the boards. They were really bright to begin with…dh called it “kindergarten” colors becaused I only got the basic prime colors… couldn’t afford all that I wanted. I used a brush to apply the dye and I worked great,. I sanded the pallet boards down and after staining it looked great. I was going to put it up for sale but dh wanted it in the entry way,,. a great complement !!!! The color is subdued and I would have liked to have brought it out a little more but it is what it is. Won’t build anything that large until the weather breaks and I can clear out the shed. Do you think the color would have soaked into the board if I put then in a container like you did?

Both sewing & joining wood pieces has always seemed similar –minus the seam allowances. It makes sense to use the same techniques and products on both. Love this idea.

Just curious how you think this would look with vellum? For my wedding invitations, I printed a faded engagement picture on vellum… could be very interesting against colored wood.
