Hey guys!!
So you non-sewing gals are going to have to bear with me for a bit. My sewing itch has returned with the addition of my new little girl… Sorry! There are many takes on the “onesie dress” out there. I always try to do my takes the cheapest, fastest and easiest so I wanted to share my version 🙂
I start with a onesie. I like getting mine at Walmart for $2… Can’t beat that!! Being that it is still 100 degrees here in Texas I decided to use a short-sleeved onesie for mine.
Next you will need a strip of fabric. I made my skirt 12″ long so I only needed 1/3 yard which I got at 30% off so it was just around $1… Whoop!
I use my serger on the next step. For you ladies sewing with just a machine, you need to ask the hubs for a serger for Christmas… They are a must! I added a rolled hem to both the top and bottom of the fabric piece.
My next step was to ruffle one end of my fabric. I used my ruffler foot on my sewing machine to quickly add a perfect ruffle.
Here she is in action…
Here is my ruffle… (15 seconds later)
My next step was to draw a line with pencil on the onesie where I wanted to attach the skirt.
Then, I opened the bottom of the onesie and pulled it on my machine.
Put the line of your ruffle straight on the pencil line and use a small zig zag stitch all the way around. I left a bit of allowance on the beginning of my fabric piece to attach it to the other end in my next step.
Once you have made it almost all the way around pull off your onesie. I flipped the skirt up and attached my two fabric ends together with good sides facing each other. I then used a simple straight stictch to attach the fabric ends.
Then, I flipped the skirt back and attached the remaining couple of inches to the dress using the same zig zag stitch as earlier.
My final step was to add a little bow. I love using grosgrain because you can fray check it with a lighter and it washes well in the wash.
I made a simple bow using my Schiff grosgrain I purchased from our favorite ribbon supply company…
They have the BEST deals and selection on all ribbon and through today you can get 15% off several different kinds of ribbon they carry! Check it out!!
I made my bow and used my machine to attach it to the top of the dress.
That’s it…. 20 minutes and less than $4 later I have a super cute little dress for my little lady!
Here she is sporting another one I made her over the weekend…
Can you tell by her expression how much she loves it?? 🙂
And here is another one I made using tulle to make a tutu onesie doing the exact same steps!
Thanks so much for stopping by!! Make sure to go check out the great products over at Ribbon Retreat!! Happy Friday!!

How wide was your fabric? Did you use the entire width of the fabric? I’m getting ready to make one for a friend’s baby and just wondered. Love the idea! It’s so simple!
toooooo! cute, i can't wait to try this out!
That's super neat! I don't have a baby, but now I want to make these for baby showers!
Oh, she's just delectable, and you look like you're having too much fun making little dainties for her.
So sweet – love the tutus! Do you make the headbands, too?
I love it! Oh how I miss wittle ones. Sigh. My baby is a boy and he's 5 now. My twin girls are 8. No more glow worms. Triple sigh. I guess I can do this for my friends with the wee wittle ones then.
My favorite is the blue tutu onesie-cutest thing I've ever seen-the baby first, then the dress! Congrats-

Simply adorable – please show us the blue cabinet the dress is hanging from!
I love love love these!!! If we ever have a baby girl, I am going to have to give this a try!! Too cute!!!
LOVE these ideas! Thanks for sharing. I want to make a tutu one for my daughter 🙂
aw, so precious! I'm expecting another little girl in six weeks and it's got my sewing machine pedal foot itching. I have recently aquired a ruffle foot myself, and I'm borderline delirious with excitement over the idea of how many ruffles I can put on how many things now that it takes so little time. Eee! Ruffles! Baby girls! I think I have a cavity.
She is ADORABLE! =) Precious little dresses and tutu as well. 😉
