Window Box !!

Oh hey friends!  Happy Monday!

I made these great window boxes a couple weeks ago, and I’m here today to share how to make them for yourself.  Here is how they turned out!

Window Planter Boxes

I LOVE them!  They add so much to those windows, and they were a breeze to make!  Plus, I made each one for under $20 in wood!

Here is what I did!

First, I found these great window box liners at The Home Depot!

I decided to design my window boxes off of these.  That way, I can easily change out the plants as the seasons change over, and it helps keep the plants from drying out as well as helps to keep the wood from rotting.  Win win!

For the box I first used a 5/8″x6x6 cedar fence panel.  You will need 1 of these per box and they cost under $2.

Here are the cuts and how I assembled step 1!

I used Gorilla Wood glue and finish nails on this whole thing!

I used my favorite Ryobi AirStrike nailer for this part!

Now for the long sides!  Here are the measurements for those!  I used a 1x8x8 cedar board for this part.

I attached those two pieces with Gorilla Wood Glue and finish nails as well!

Almost done!

My last step is trim!

I used a 1x3x8 cedar board for the bottom trim piece and a 1x2x8 cedar board for the bottom trim piece.

And for the small side pieces… They were all 7.25″.  I kept the back of the box flush to go up against the wall better!

That’s it!

My final step was giving the whole thing a coat of my very fav…

Rust-Oleum Dark Walnut Ultimate Wood Stain

and since these guys will be sitting in the elements, I also gave them 3 coats of Spar Varnish!  This stuff is simple!  Just apply with a brush!

Once they dried, I attached them to my brick.  You need a hammer drill to drill into brick!  Luckily Ryobi has you covered if you don’t have one!

I used these galvanized brackets found in the ROOFING section to attach mine to the wall.  I attached the L brackets to the brick and then attached each box to the L bracket.  You need to get galvanized L brackets.  The zinc brackets will corrode over time.

Here is a shot from below!

And you can see how I filled the plastic liner up and then just dropped it into the cedar box… EASY!  And… when I’m ready to change out the plants all I have to do is pull that liner out, refill it with new plants and drop it back in… LOVE!
