DIY Modern Platform Bed – Tutorial
That was fun!!! Now for the how-to tutorial!
To start, I ripped the round edges off of all of the 2×4 boards to make them 3″ wide. I did this to give the bed a more modern look. This is not a necessary step but it will change the measurements of the long pieces, on the base assemblies. If you choose not to rip the 2×4’s just measure and cut as you go.
DIY Modern Platform Bed – Pocket Holes
I made my cuts for the base assemblies and drilled 1 1/2″ pocket holes into the ends of the long boards. You can find our favorite Kreg Jig model HERE on Amazon.
I attached the long pieces to the short pieces with 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws and wood glue.
DIY Modern Platform Bed – Base Assembly
Here is one base assembly. I built two of these.
To get the perfect fit on the diagonal pieces, I cut one piece a little bit longer than what the cut list calls for. I marked center on the base assembly, lined up the board under the assembly and marked the angle cuts. Then, I lined the blade, of my miter saw, up to the the lines and made the cuts.
I drilled 1 1/2″ pocket holes into the ends of the diagonal cut boards (we showed how to do this, in detail on the video) and attached the boards to the base assembly with 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws and wood glue.
Next, I cut the side rails to size and drilled 1 1/2″ pocket holes into both ends. I attached them to the top of the base assemblies with 2 1/2″ pocket hole screws. The top of the side rail will be flush with the top of the base assembly. Don’t use glue here because it will make it impossible to take the bed down to move it.
Then, I cut the cleat pieces to size and attached them to the side rails, 1″ down from the top of the side rails. I used 2″ wood screws to attach the cleats. Do not use glue here either.
DIY Modern Platform Bed – Staining
Now is a great time to add a finish to the bed!
I used one coat of Honey Maple Stain by Varathane for the bed frame.
While the stain was drying, I cut the mattress slats to size. Once the stain was dry, I brought the bed inside and attached the slats to the cleats. I used my 18 nailer with 1 1/4″ nails but you can also use 1 1/4″ wood screws (that will make the bed easier to disassemble to move later).
That was it! Tenley loves her new big girl room and I do too 🙂
